Welcome to Pocklington
The perfect place from which to explore York and the Yorkshire Wolds
Pocklington: The Perfect Getaway
One of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the UK, Pocklington is a thriving market town with a history going right back to the Iron Age. These days it is more coffee and cakes than spears and swords, a lovely base from which to explore all that Yorkshire has to offer.
Tucked up a quiet street just off the Market Place you will find our two cottages. Carpenter’s sleeps two people and is a self-contained cottage, dating back to 1850. It has a rich history in the town. Originally built by Thomas Grant, the famous local builder, to house his horses, it became an ice-cream parlour in the 1950s. When we bought it in 2001 it was showing signs of neglect but we jumped at the chance to restore it. Using the original pitch pine from the beams, Patrick made the kitchen cupboard doors and drawers, and the bedroom and bathroom cabinets. He made the bedroom chairs from British hardwoods, including Yew branches from the garden. We installed underfloor heating and a wood burning stove to make the cottage cosy and romantic even in the depths of a Yorkshire winter. After a visit to the Stained Glass Centre near Scarborough we commissioned a beautiful, patchwork, stained glass window for the bedroom, and guests have said how they like the way this now spills colourful morning light over the bed.
Milliner’s sleeps four people. It is a larger property: a Victorian terrace house dating from the 1840s. It is believed to be the former residence of Mrs Rhodes, a local Milliner, and this is what inspired the cottage’s name. It was important to us to retain as much of the character of the property as possible. With that in mind Patrick removed the sash windows (long since stuck tight with paint!) and reglazed them, fixing or replacing those parts of the framework that were the worse for wear. Now they work like new and we like to think they put the Victorian soul back into the house. But don’t just take our word for it. Why not book a stay and see for yourself?
Both cottages are tucked up a quiet side street just off the main Market Place, with several cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops only a short stroll away. If you choose to eat in you will find the two local supermarkets are very well stocked and there are two local butchers selling produce directly from the surrounding farms. Some of our guests use our holiday cottages as a base from which to visit the historic city of York. There is a direct bus service from Pocklington or you can drive there in 25 minutes. If exploring the countryside is what you are after then simply stroll to the top of the road and you will soon find yourself in the peaceful, rolling beauty of the Wolds. Thirty minutes in the car could get you to places such as Castle Howard and Sledmere House, or go just a little further and you could be exploring the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Coast.
In the Summer both cottages give you a peaceful place to sit outside and relax. Milliner’s has a pretty courtyard garden, complete with magical party lights, while Carpenter’s has a private patio but also gives you access to our own spacious garden and orchard, complete with free range hens! If the weather turns colder then just stick another log on the wood burner and get cosy! We are always available if you need advice or ideas to help you make the most of your time here in Pocklington. Whether you are visiting friends, attending a wedding, delving into History or just exploring Yorkshire, whatever your reason for taking a break we feel sure you will enjoy your stay at one of our holiday cottages.
